I am trying to hunt up the original research here. If it ends up as in the newspaper I have at least one immediate case it is relevant to.

John,

we need that Salvation Army band to belt out "Tell Me the Old Old Story".

THERE ISN'T ANY F'ING ORIGINAL RESEARCH

It comes from a single enthusiast, the original research, if there was any, has never been published after 37 years, and he was simply a campaigner on the dangers of shaking babies.

Where have we heard that before?

His name was Dr. John Caffey in the US. and between 1946 and 1972 he campiagned on the dangers of shaking babies, the key paper taking off in 1972 and another in 1974.

After that in the '80's "research" - market research - was done with parents on whether they thought this was a danger and would they welcome information on it?

It has gone on from there.

He wrote an article in 1972 in the "American Journal of the Diseases of Children", "On the theory and practice of shaking infants. Its potential residual effects of permanent brain damage and mental retardation". - Caffey J - Am J Dis Child - 01-AUG-1972; 124(2): 161-9n and another article in the American medical periodical "Pediatrics" "The Whiplash Shaken Infant Syndrome: Manual Shaking by the Extremities With Whiplash-Induced Intracranial and Intraocular Bleeding, Linked With Residual Permanent Brain Damage and Mental Retardation" PEDIATRICS Vol. 54 No. 4 October 1974, pp. 396-403, , but neither are fully available on line without subscription and have no research and control group and were never peer-reviewed.

Like our friends Meadow and Southall's articles they are merely a "Anecdotal" account of cases he had been involved in and his theories.

neither The lancet or the BMJ would publish it.
