Parliament EDMs

Postby Andrew on Sat Jun 07, 2008 4:21 pm

I think after the recent question by the member 'Tim' & after earlier questions by members asking how they can support tabled EDM's that a sticky thread in "Parliament EDMs" might be of assistance, explaining a little about EDM’s & how members could get involved.

This would be beneficial because;

It will enlighten members & guests as to what an EDM is & will allow members of JFF who do want to help to get involved.

Make John’s efforts of tabling the EDM’s more worthwhile.

It will prevent repeat questions of “what is an EDM?”, “How can I help?

Thoughts?

EDMs are best seen as a mechanism for people to ask their MPs to do something on the public record in support of a proposal.

Those who are "in the government" (About 100 Labour MPs) cannot sign the EDM, but can write to the minister.

It also shows a sign of the level of support for a proposition. I don't campaign for EDMs in parliament because it is not a good use of time so those that sign are those that sign because they pick it up themselves.

Hence that is a lower threshold of support.

EDMs are also covered by article IX of the 1688 Bill of Rights which means that they can say things that are otherwise contempt of court.

Same as petitions (parliamentary ones only)
