Re: Freedom of Information Request

Thank you for your recent request, which was received on Wednesday 8th April 2009. Please see
below:

1.Total number of complaints made to CAFCASS (whether accepted or not by CAFCASS into
their complaints system). For 2007/08, 709.

2. Total number of complaints accepted and registered by CAFCASS. 388.

3. Total number of complaints received but not registered by CAFCASS. 321.

4. I would like to know how many complaints are "refused" to be registered by CAFCASS.
As above - Question 3.

This data can also be found in the Cafcass Annual report and Accounts 2007/08 at
www.cafcass.gov.uk Similar data will be provided in the 2008/09 annual report which will be
published later this summer.

review to be undertaken. If you are dissatisfied with the way the internal review is handled or with the
final decision made at that review about the information released, you are free to contact the

Who fudged/massaged those figures for them & how the hell have they got away with it (other than the ability to refuse to register complaints) ???

JH: Would it be time to raise an EDM on the CAFCASS complaints system?
Or would a journalist be a better angle.

That's why I've been gathering FOI evidence on CAFCASS etc.

I'd like some advice, as to which is more effective, an EDM, a Petition if Dai is willing to proceed or a maladministration case on CAFCASS?

Lack of procedures seems to be the major issue... they don't register the complaints.

I've thrown an FOI over to OFSTED on CAFCASS complaints system.... to see what they make of it.

Any idea's on how to proceed ?

That a 45% refusal to register complaints statistic.

That's got to be fudging the figures for OFSTED.

This is interesting as there is no mention of a 'criteria' of accepting and/or rehecting complaints. I would have thought that any complaint made be it trivial or major would be registered as a complaint. This approach is being creative with figures.

How about aking them to break down the complaints figures down by region... ?? They have not as yet responded to my FOI request last year December.

There's an FOI outstanding on CAFCASS wales, where their procedures and policies have been requested.

I agree about the registering of Complaints. Surely they should be logged, then investigated. Then it's those complaints upheld or not upheld. The problem we have, is that CAFASS run the complaints system, and maybe OFSTED should oversee complaints.

If they make up the rules as they go along without a set criteria is an issue.

I've gone back to CAFCASS and asked for further clarification on the stats, which months do they apply to, where are the figures for 2005/2006/2008-9.
None of these have been supplied.

But if you can think of any other questions let me know.

What could be useful is that we have CAFCASS Wales and CAFCASS... we could check the difference in their procedures...

An FOI on the welsh CAFCASS is outstanding for complaints registered. Now what will be interesting is the magnitude of their figures. IF they have 4000 complaints and the whole of England has less than 400, something fishy is going on.

I have some questions for crapcass.

1. How many children they represented in those years??

2. How many were actually given Wishes & Feelings Packs, which were completed and put beofre the courts.

3. How many children they did NOT actually represent Wishes & Feelings for in court, i.e. telling the court something else was 'In The Child's Best Interests'.
